Wrongful Conviction Trauma Center expands its services with a residential program supporting women affected by wrongful conviction and incarceration
The Wrongful Conviction Trauma Center (WCTC), founded by exoneree Marilyn Mulero, will hold a grand opening celebration on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, for the Imperishable Restoration House for Women, a Chicago residential program developed to support women rebuilding their lives following incarceration and involvement with the criminal justice system.
The event will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., with the opening ceremony beginning at 1:30 p.m. Members of the media are invited to attend and are encouraged to RSVP in advance. For the privacy and safety of residents, the address of the residence will not be included in the public distribution of this press release. Location information will be provided directly to confirmed media attendees.
The Imperishable Restoration House is sponsored by the Wrongful Conviction Trauma Center and is intended to provide a stable residential environment and access to support for women navigating the transition following incarceration. The project expands WCTC’s work addressing issues that can affect individuals after wrongful conviction and lengthy incarceration, including housing, trauma support, financial stability, advocacy and community reintegration.
Marilyn Mulero’s Background
Mulero was arrested in Chicago in 1992 at age 21 in connection with the murders of Jimmy Cruz and Hector Reyes. Her case involved former Chicago Police detectives Reynaldo Guevara and Ernest Halvorsen.
Mulero was sentenced to death in 1993. Her death sentence was subsequently overturned, and she was resentenced to life imprisonment.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker commuted Mulero’s sentence in 2020, and she was released from prison in April of that year after approximately 28 years of incarceration.
On August 9, 2022, the Circuit Court of Cook County vacated Mulero’s conviction and prosecutors dismissed the charges against her. She was subsequently recognized as an exoneree. The Death Penalty Information Center identified Mulero as the 190th person exonerated from death row in the United States and the third woman exonerated from death row since 1973.
Following her release and exoneration, Mulero established the Wrongful Conviction Trauma Center to provide resources and assistance to individuals dealing with the effects of wrongful conviction and incarceration. The Imperishable Restoration House represents an expansion of that work into residential support for women.
Federal Civil Rights Litigation: Mulero has filed a federal civil-rights lawsuit arising from her wrongful conviction and incarceration. The lawsuit, Mulero v. Guevara et al., Case No. 1:23-cv-04795, is pending in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division. The complaint alleges constitutional violations connected with the investigation that resulted in Mulero’s conviction.
